The shower feels fine until someone starts washing the dishes. Then the flow drops, the temperature changes or both. It is easy to assume the showerhead is the problem, but the useful clue is that another fixture affects it.
With guests staying over Christmas, your household may use two bathrooms, the kitchen and laundry closer together than usual. If you are already noticing a change, it is worth investigating while there is time to make a sensible decision.
Start by noticing the pattern
Does the drop happen only in one shower, or at several taps? Is it mainly the hot water, the cold water or both? Does it happen when another fixture runs, at a particular time of day, or even when everything else is off?
Those details help narrow the possibilities. Unitywater advises checking cold taps inside and outside when investigating pressure problems; a wider issue may call for checking local outages or contacting the water supplier. If the issue is limited to particular fixtures or hot water, the property’s plumbing or equipment may need attention.
More than one thing can affect the result
The cause could be a restriction, a valve, a fixture, pipework, a concealed leak, supply conditions or the way the hot water system performs under simultaneous demand. Temperature changes can have their own causes. A brief observation cannot tell you which one applies.
A continuous-flow unit, for example, still has a maximum flow rate. Storage systems have different capacity and recovery considerations. The right answer depends on the equipment, plumbing and how the household uses water, not simply the number of bedrooms.
What to tell your plumber
Note which fixtures are affected and whether the problem occurs with hot, cold or both. If you can safely read the label, provide the hot water system’s make and model. Mention whether the issue is new, if neighbours have noticed a similar change, and what happens when another tap is used.
Avoid adjusting valves or dismantling hot water equipment to experiment. If there is an active leak, seek help promptly.
