Very happy with the service from RJT Plumbing & Gas Solutions. They attended to investigate unusually high LPG usage, installed a proper test point, pressure-tested the gas system, checked for leaks, adjusted the LPG regulator to the correct pressure and inspected the hot-water system. Everything was checked thoroughly and explained clearly, and it was reassuring to have the system properly tested and confirmed safe with no faults identified. Professional, knowledgeable and easy to deal with. I would happily recommend RJT Plumbing & Gas Solutions and use them again.

Are Bidets Taking Over Australian Bathrooms? Why More Homeowners Are Ditching Toilet Paper

Over the past few years, we’ve started seeing a shift in how people think about their bathrooms.

What used to be standard is now being questioned. Toilet paper is one of those things.

Globally, bidets are having a moment. Some international manufacturers are even winning design awards for modern bidet systems that integrate seamlessly into everyday bathrooms. While Australia has traditionally been slower to adopt them, that’s starting to change.

We’re now getting more questions from homeowners asking whether a bidet is worth installing, how they work, and whether they’re hygienic.

Let’s break it down properly.

What Is a Bidet and How Does It Work?

A bidet is a system that uses a controlled stream of water to clean you after using the toilet.

There are a few common types:

  • Standalone bidet fixtures (less common in Australia)
  • Bidet toilet seats that replace your existing seat
  • Handheld bidet sprayers installed beside the toilet

Most modern setups connect directly to your home’s water supply and can include features like temperature control, pressure adjustment, and even air drying.

Why Are People Moving Away from Toilet Paper?

There are a few key drivers behind this shift.

1. Hygiene Concerns

COVID changed how people think about cleanliness. There’s been a noticeable increase in people wanting solutions that feel more hygienic and thorough.

Water-based cleaning simply does a better job than dry paper. It’s the same logic as washing your hands instead of wiping them.

2. Comfort and Skin Health

Toilet paper can be abrasive, especially for people with sensitive skin or ongoing issues.

Bidets offer a gentler alternative, which is why they’ve been standard in many parts of Europe and Asia for years.

3. Environmental Impact

People are becoming more aware of waste.

Toilet paper production uses significant amounts of water, energy, and trees. A bidet can reduce or even eliminate that ongoing consumption.

4. Cost Over Time

While a bidet has an upfront cost, it can reduce your long-term spending on toilet paper.

It’s one of those small changes that adds up over time.

Are Bidets Common in Australia?

Not yet, but they’re growing.

Australia has historically been slow to adopt bidets compared to places like Japan or parts of Europe. That’s mainly due to plumbing layouts, cultural habits, and the fact that most homes were never designed with them in mind.

That said, we’re now seeing:

  • More homeowners asking about retrofitting options
  • Increased availability of compliant products
  • A shift in mindset around hygiene and sustainability

It’s following the same pattern we’ve seen with things like heat pump hot water systems. Early adopters first, then broader demand once people understand the benefits.

Can You Install a Bidet in an Existing Bathroom?

In most cases, yes.

There are a few options depending on your setup:

Bidet Seat Installations

These are the simplest upgrade. They replace your existing toilet seat and connect to the water supply.

Some models also require a power point if they include heating or drying features.

Handheld Sprayers

These are mounted next to the toilet and connected to the plumbing system.

Important note: these must be installed correctly to meet Australian plumbing regulations, particularly around backflow prevention.

Full Bidet or Integrated Toilet Systems

These are more involved and usually part of a renovation or new build.

They offer the most seamless experience but require proper planning and installation.

Are Bidets Safe and Compliant in Australia?

This is where professional installation matters.

Australia has strict plumbing standards, especially when it comes to anything that connects to your water supply.

Incorrect installations can pose contamination risks to your drinking water.

That’s why it’s critical to use a licensed plumber who understands:

  • Backflow prevention requirements
  • Water pressure control
  • Proper fixture installation

Done properly, a bidet system is completely safe and compliant.

Is a Bidet Worth It?

For most people, it comes down to three things:

  • You want a higher level of cleanliness
  • You’re looking to reduce ongoing household waste
  • You’re open to upgrading how your bathroom works

Once people switch, they rarely go back.

It’s not just a trend. It’s a different standard.

Thinking About Installing a Bidet?

If you’re curious about whether a bidet will work in your home, the best place to start is with your current setup.

We can help you understand your options, what’s compliant, and what makes sense for your bathroom.
