Very happy with the service from RJT Plumbing & Gas Solutions. They attended to investigate unusually high LPG usage, installed a proper test point, pressure-tested the gas system, checked for leaks, adjusted the LPG regulator to the correct pressure and inspected the hot-water system. Everything was checked thoroughly and explained clearly, and it was reassuring to have the system properly tested and confirmed safe with no faults identified. Professional, knowledgeable and easy to deal with. I would happily recommend RJT Plumbing & Gas Solutions and use them again.

When a Gas Cooktop Flame Becomes a Safety Warning

A gas cooktop that is noisy, difficult to light or producing an unusual flame should never be dismissed as a minor inconvenience. Sometimes the visible flame is the first warning that the appliance or wider gas installation needs professional attention.

RJT Plumbing & Gas recently attended a home in Kallangur after the owners reported several maintenance concerns, including a gas cooktop issue, noisy toilets, a noisy cistern inlet while filling and leaking showers.

What initially appeared to be a collection of ordinary household plumbing repairs quickly revealed a much more serious gas safety concern.

An Abnormal Flame That Needed Immediate Attention

When the gas cooktop was tested, the burner produced an unstable and excessively high flame. Instead of remaining controlled around the burner, the flame became large, yellow and orange.

This was not simply a matter of the cooktop taking longer to heat a pan. The flame behaviour indicated that the appliance was not operating as it should and required investigation by a licensed gas fitter.

A properly operating gas cooktop will generally produce a controlled flame distributed evenly around the burner. While an occasional yellow tip may occur because of dust or food residue, a consistently yellow, orange, uneven or unusually high flame can indicate a problem.

Possible causes may include an incorrectly positioned burner cap, blocked burner openings, incorrect gas pressure, unsuitable components, regulator problems, poor air-to-gas mixture or an appliance that has not been configured correctly for the available gas supply.

The exact cause cannot be determined safely by looking at the flame alone. The appliance and gas installation need to be inspected and tested properly.

What Does a Yellow or Orange Gas Flame Mean?

Many homeowners associate any visible flame with a working cooktop. However, the shape, height, stability and colour of the flame can provide important clues about how the gas is burning.

Warning signs that may justify turning the appliance off and arranging a gas inspection include:

  • A flame that remains strongly yellow or orange
  • Flames rising far above the burner
  • Uneven flames around the burner ring
  • A flame that lifts away from the burner
  • Popping, roaring or unusual burner noises
  • Black marks or soot appearing around cookware
  • Difficulty lighting or keeping the burner alight
  • A gas smell near the cooktop or appliance

These symptoms do not all have the same cause, but they should not be ignored. Continuing to use an appliance that is burning incorrectly can allow a relatively small fault to become a more serious safety problem.

Why DIY Gas Cooktop Repairs Are Not Worth the Risk

Some cooktop problems can appear simple. A homeowner might be tempted to adjust a component, clean a gas jet with a sharp object, alter the regulator or replace parts based on advice found online.

Gas appliances are different from ordinary household appliances. Changes to burner components, jets, regulators, pipework or gas pressure can affect combustion and appliance safety.

A gas cooktop must also be suitable for the type of gas supplied to the property. Appliances configured for natural gas and appliances configured for LPG do not necessarily use the same jets, pressures or settings.

A licensed gas fitter can inspect the burner components, check the gas supply, test the operating pressure and determine whether the appliance has been installed and commissioned correctly.

The Cooktop Was Not the Only Gas Compliance Concern

During the visit, a separate issue was also identified around the home’s LPG cylinder installation.

An air-conditioning component had been positioned too close to the LPG cylinders. As a result, the required separation around the gas installation had been compromised and the air-conditioning equipment will need to be relocated for the overall installation to comply.

The important lesson is that different household systems do not operate in isolation.

An air conditioner, power point, hot water system, pool pump, garden structure or other new installation may affect the safety clearances around existing LPG cylinders and gas equipment.

Before equipment is installed near LPG cylinders, the contractor should consider the existing gas installation, the required clearances, access for cylinder replacement and whether the new equipment could introduce an ignition or compliance risk.

Why LPG Cylinder Clearances Matter

LPG cylinders must be positioned in a location that allows the system to operate, ventilate and be serviced safely. The surrounding area also needs to remain clear of equipment and potential ignition sources that could compromise the installation.

Installing new equipment too close to the cylinders can create several problems. It may interfere with required separation distances, restrict access to valves and regulators or leave insufficient room for cylinders to be changed safely.

This is why LPG cylinder compliance should be considered whenever exterior equipment is added or relocated around a home.

Something that appears to fit neatly beside the cylinders may still be unsuitable from a gas safety perspective.

Home Improvements Can Affect Existing Gas Installations

Gas installations are often completed years before later renovations or upgrades take place. The LPG cylinders may have originally been compliant, but subsequent work around the property can change the surrounding conditions.

Common projects that may affect an existing gas installation include:

  • Installing an air-conditioning system
  • Adding an outdoor power point
  • Building a deck, screen or enclosure
  • Relocating a hot water system
  • Installing a pool pump or filtration system
  • Adding garden sheds or storage structures
  • Changing windows, doors or ventilation openings
  • Extending or renovating the home

Each individual project may appear unrelated to the gas system. However, the position of new equipment can affect the safety and compliance of what is already there.

A quick assessment before installation is usually much easier than relocating equipment after the work has been completed.

A Routine Plumbing Call Can Reveal a Bigger Problem

This Kallangur callout is a good example of why unusual noises, leaks and appliance problems are worth investigating rather than simply tolerating.

The owners initially had several concerns around the home. These included noisy toilets, a noisy cistern inlet while filling, leaking showers and the gas cooktop problem.

Each issue needed attention, but the cooktop inspection revealed the most urgent safety concern.

A licensed plumber and gas fitter is not only looking at the symptom described over the phone. They are also assessing the surrounding connections, installation condition and any other visible issue that could affect the safety of the home.

What Can Cause a Noisy Toilet Cistern?

A toilet that whistles, vibrates or makes a loud noise while refilling may have a worn or restricted inlet valve. Water pressure, loose components and ageing cistern parts can also contribute to the noise.

Although a noisy cistern is not usually as urgent as an unsafe gas appliance, it may indicate that a component is approaching failure or no longer controlling the incoming water properly.

Replacing or servicing the affected inlet components can often restore quieter operation and reduce the risk of an eventual leak or continuously running toilet.

Why Shower Leaks Should Be Investigated Early

A visible shower leak may come from a tap, showerhead, fitting, seal or connection. In other situations, the first sign may be moisture appearing outside the shower area, water staining or damage to nearby walls and flooring.

The longer water escapes into surrounding materials, the greater the potential for deterioration and more expensive repairs.

Identifying whether the problem is coming from the plumbing, fittings, waterproofing or shower enclosure helps ensure the correct repair is completed.

What Should You Do if Your Gas Cooktop Flame Looks Wrong?

If a gas cooktop suddenly produces unusually high, unstable, strongly yellow or orange flames, stop using the affected burner and arrange an inspection by a licensed gas fitter.

Do not attempt to alter jets, regulators or internal gas components yourself. Avoid repeatedly relighting an appliance that is behaving unpredictably.

If you can smell gas, treat the situation seriously. Do not continue operating the appliance while waiting to see whether the smell disappears.

A professional inspection can determine whether the problem is isolated to the burner, related to the cooktop installation or connected to the broader LPG or gas supply system.

Concerned About a Gas Cooktop or LPG Installation?

An unusual cooktop flame may be the most visible symptom of a problem that cannot be diagnosed safely without testing the appliance and gas supply.

Likewise, renovations and new equipment installed outside the home can unintentionally affect the required clearances around existing LPG cylinders.

If something does not look, sound or smell right, having it inspected early is the safest approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a yellow or orange flame on a gas cooktop mean?

A consistently yellow, orange, unusually high or unstable gas cooktop flame may indicate that the burner or gas appliance is not operating correctly. Possible causes include blocked burner openings, an incorrectly positioned burner cap, unsuitable components, incorrect gas pressure or a problem with the air-to-gas mixture. The appliance should be inspected by a licensed gas fitter.

Is a large flame from a gas cooktop dangerous?

An excessively large or unstable gas cooktop flame should be treated as a safety concern. Stop using the affected burner and arrange an inspection by a licensed gas fitter rather than attempting to adjust the appliance yourself.

What should I do if my gas cooktop flame suddenly looks different?

Turn off the affected burner and avoid continuing to use it until the appliance has been inspected. Do not adjust gas jets, regulators or internal components yourself. If you can smell gas, stop using the appliance and arrange urgent professional assistance.

Can an incorrectly positioned burner cap affect the flame?

Yes. A burner cap that is dirty, damaged or not seated correctly can affect the shape and stability of the flame. However, an abnormal flame can also indicate a wider appliance or gas supply issue, so persistent problems should be checked by a licensed gas fitter.

Can an air-conditioning unit be installed near LPG cylinders?

Air-conditioning equipment must not compromise the required safety clearances around LPG cylinders, regulators or associated gas equipment. The proposed location should be assessed before installation because equipment placed too close to the cylinders may need to be relocated.

Why are clearances around LPG cylinders important?

Appropriate clearances help maintain ventilation, safe access and separation from potential ignition sources. New equipment, structures or home improvements installed around existing LPG cylinders can affect the compliance and safety of the gas installation.

Can renovations affect an existing LPG installation?

Yes. Air conditioners, outdoor power points, hot water systems, decks, screens, sheds and other additions can change the area surrounding an existing LPG installation. Gas cylinder clearances should be considered before new equipment or structures are installed.
