A leaking tap is rarely harmless. While it might start as a faint drip, over time it becomes a financial drain and a structural threat. At RJT Plumbing & Gas, we don’t just patch leaks; we diagnose, prevent and mitigate. Here’s everything your client should know (but probably doesn’t).

1. Why Taps Start Leaking: The Engineering Breakdown
1. Elastomer failure (O-rings, washers, seals)
Elastomers (rubber, EPDM, Viton, etc.) degrade over time via mechanical fatigue, swelling/shrinkage (with temperature or water chemistry), creep (slow deformation under load), or chemical attack (chlorine, dissolved ions). As seals lose shape, they no longer press perfectly against mating surfaces, allowing water to sneak through.
2. Valve seat pitting / micro-corrosion / abrasion
In taps with discrete sealing surfaces, the valve seat must be ultra-smooth. But water containing dissolved oxygen, chlorine, or particulates can corrode metal surfaces, cause microscopic pits or scratches, or embed abrasive particles. Imperfect conformity means leakage past the seal even if the washer is replaced.
3. Pressure transients / overpressure events
Even if your system’s steady pressure is acceptable, short surges (from pump starts/stops, water hammer, solenoid valve switching) can spike pressure momentarily. That stress may force water past marginal seals or fatigue them over time.
4. Mechanical misalignment / loosening
Thermal expansion, vibration, or wear can cause small shifts in alignment of internal parts. If seals no longer meet flush, leaks occur. Over-tightening can deform parts; under-tightening allows movement.
5. Mineral scale, sediments & abrasive wear
In hard-water areas, scale (calcium, magnesium, silica) builds up on sealing surfaces, gradually altering profiles. Also, particulates in water act like sandpaper. Over cycles, abrasive wear erodes fine tolerances.
6. Galvanic or electrochemical corrosion
Mixing alloys (brass, copper, stainless, different plating) without proper isolation invites galvanic currents in water (an electrolyte). The “less noble” metal corrodes, which can degrade sealing surfaces adjacent to seals.
7. Thermal cycling & differential expansion
Hot vs cold water cycles lead to thermal expansion mismatches. Seals and metal parts expand/contract differently. Over many cycles, small micro-movements fatigue or crack seals and interfaces.
When you combine a few of those over time, you often get a drip — and what seems like a simple fix might hide a deeper material or system issue.
Each leaking tap is a symptom, not just a fault. When these failures are caught early, the repair is simple. When left, they compound.
2. The Hidden Costs of Doing Nothing
Water loss & utility bills
That drip wastes thousands of litres annually — water you’re still paying for. Then you tack on the detection cost ($200–$500+ for typical homes) just to find where it’s hiding.
Property & finish damage
Leaks don’t stay local. They seep into cabinetry, drywall, flooring. Remediation often requires tearing back surfaces — much more costly than replacing a washer.
Plumbing metastasis
Leaky systems invite more leaks. Replacing one worn seal today prevents three tomorrow. Ignoring it risks bursts, fixture failure or hidden pipe failures.
Insurable / legal risk
Insurance may deny or limit claims if damage resulted from neglect. And in a building compliance setting (e.g. renovations, resale), discovered damage hurts you.
3. What We Do Differently at RJT
- Thorough diagnosis, not blind replacement
- Premium materials (sealed O-rings, corrosion-resistant alloys, matched metals, quality seals)
- Surge & pressure protection built into design
- Future-proofing for smart plumbing / water reuse
- Documented compliance (QBCC, NCC, local plumbing codes)
When RJT fixes a tap, you get more than the leak fixed; you get reassurance, durability, and no surprises later.
4. Call to Action
Don’t let a drip become a disaster. If your taps are dripping, or your water bill seems off, call RJT Plumbing & Gas — we’ll find the root cause, fix it properly, and save you far more in return than the problem’s cost. Contact us today
