A laundry renovation may be designed around new cabinetry, better storage and updated appliances, but some of the most important work happens before any of those finishes are installed.
With the walls open on this recent renovation, RJT Plumbing & Gas was able to inspect the existing plumbing, remove concealed compression joints, rerun the water lines and prepare the laundry for its new layout.
The hot water system was also being relocated outside, allowing the internal plumbing to be reorganised as part of the overall renovation rather than worked around later.

The Best Time to Correct Plumbing Is While the Walls Are Open
Once a laundry has been lined, waterproofed, painted and fitted with cabinetry, accessing the plumbing becomes considerably more difficult.
That is why the demolition and rough-in stages of a renovation are so important. They provide an opportunity to look at what has previously been hidden and decide whether it should remain in place for the next stage of the home’s life.
In this case, parts of the existing water supply included compression joints that would have remained concealed behind the finished walls.
Removing Compression Joints from Inside the Wall
Compression fittings rely on a mechanical connection. While they can have appropriate uses in accessible locations, enclosing them permanently inside a wall can create an avoidable weak point in the plumbing system.
If a concealed fitting begins to leak, the first indication may not be water running from the connection. It may instead appear as swelling cabinetry, damaged plasterboard, discoloured flooring, mould or moisture inside the wall cavity.
Because the laundry had already been stripped back for renovation, the existing joints could be removed and the water lines rerun before the wall linings went back on.
This is exactly the kind of preventative work that makes sense during a renovation. The wall is already open, access is available and the plumbing can be corrected without damaging newly completed finishes later.
Rerunning the Water Lines for the New Laundry
The new hot and cold water lines were routed through the exposed framing and positioned to suit the updated laundry setup.
This stage needs to be planned around the complete room, including the laundry tub, washing machine, cabinetry, tapware, drainage and the location of accessible isolation valves.
Good renovation plumbing is not simply about getting water from one point to another. It is about making sure the services finish in the right place, remain accessible and do not conflict with drawers, shelves, appliances or the cabinetmaker’s installation.
Resolving those details during the rough-in helps the remaining trades complete their work without last-minute changes or compromises.
Relocating the Hot Water System Outside
The renovation also involved preparing the plumbing so the existing hot water system could be relocated externally.
Moving a water heater outside can recover usable space inside the home and provide clearer access for servicing or replacement. However, the new position must be properly planned around the water supply, hot water outlet, valves, drainage and the surrounding structure.
Completing the relocation as part of the renovation allowed the internal lines to be rerouted cleanly while the framing was exposed.
Renovation Plumbing Should Be Planned Early
Plumbing is sometimes treated as something that can be organised after the new laundry or bathroom has already been designed.
In reality, the plumbing layout affects where fixtures can sit, how cabinetry is constructed, where appliances connect and how easily the system can be maintained in the future.
Bringing a licensed plumber into the project early allows the existing services to be assessed before the new room is built around them.
It also creates the opportunity to remove questionable concealed connections, replace ageing sections of pipework and design a cleaner layout for the renovated space.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should plumbing work be completed during a laundry renovation?
Plumbing alterations should be planned and completed while the walls are open and before wall linings, cabinetry and appliances are installed. This gives the plumber clear access to reroute water lines, adjust drainage and position connections correctly for the new laundry layout.
Why should compression joints be removed from behind walls?
Compression joints are mechanical connections that should remain accessible for inspection and maintenance. Removing them from concealed wall cavities reduces the number of hidden connection points that could potentially leak after the renovation is complete.
Can water lines be relocated during a laundry renovation?
Yes. Hot and cold water lines can be rerouted to suit the planned position of the washing machine, laundry tub, tapware and cabinetry. Completing this work during the rough-in stage helps ensure the connections remain accessible and do not interfere with the new layout.
Can an indoor hot water system be relocated outside?
In many homes, a hot water system can be relocated to a suitable external position. The plumber must assess the proposed location, pipe routes, drainage, valves, clearances and installation requirements before the system is moved.
Why should a plumber be involved early in a renovation?
Early plumbing involvement helps identify hidden issues, confirm fixture locations and coordinate the water and drainage services with the cabinetry and building plans. This can prevent expensive alterations once the walls and finishes have been installed.
Does RJT Plumbing and Gas complete renovation plumbing?
