You search for a local plumber in North Lakes, find a website with your suburb in the headline and make the call. But what does “local” actually tell you about the business you have booked?
It may describe the area a business services. It does not, by itself, establish where the business is based, who owns it or who will arrive at your home.
Those details matter when you want clear advice, someone accountable for the work and a straightforward way to arrange follow-up. Here are the questions worth asking before you book.
Does “servicing North Lakes” mean locally owned?
A service area and a business base are different things. A business can advertise plumbing services in North Lakes while operating from elsewhere, or be part of a wider organisation with branches in several regions.
Ask where the business is based and who owns the operation you are booking. A local phone number, suburb landing page or branded vehicle is not a substitute for that answer.
A larger or interstate business can provide good service. The useful distinction is whether its description matches how it actually operates, and whether that arrangement suits you.
Are you booking the plumber or a booking service?
Ask which business will provide the quote, contract for the job and issue the invoice. If your enquiry is being passed to another provider, find out who that provider is before agreeing to the booking.
This makes it easier to check the right business details and understand who to contact if the scope changes or you have a question after the work is complete.
Who will actually come to your home?
Will the owner attend, an employee or a subcontractor? Each arrangement can work well; the important thing is knowing what to expect.
If you have explained an intermittent leak, a hot water fault or previous repairs, ask whether that information will reach the person attending. Photos, the appliance model and a short description of when the problem happens can help the plumber prepare.
Owner-operated service offers a direct connection between the person behind the business and the work being carried out. You know whose reputation is attached to the job and who to approach with questions.
Does the licence cover the work you need?
Check the licence details for the business you are engaging and the type of work involved. Queensland licensing distinguishes between contracting for work and the occupational licences needed to personally perform particular trades.
Gas work is a useful example. A plumbing qualification alone does not establish that a person is licensed for your gas job. Ask who will carry it out and whether their current gas work licence or authorisation covers that work, including any conditions.
For a company, a qualified nominee is a normal part of QBCC licensing. The nominee can be a suitably qualified employee or company officer, such as a director, and is responsible for ensuring the company’s building work is adequately supervised. The owner does not necessarily have to be the gas fitter. What matters is that the business and the people doing or supervising the work hold the appropriate licences.
You can find licensing guidance through QBCC’s company licensing information and check current gas licence details through the Resources Safety and Health Queensland portal.
What will you be charged, and who handles follow-up?
Before the visit, ask about any call-out or assessment charge, what it includes and whether additional work needs your approval. If the cause cannot be established until inspection, ask how the next steps will be quoted.
Also ask who to contact afterwards, what documentation you will receive and how any workmanship concerns are handled. Clear answers are more useful than a broad promise on an advertisement.
